Urban Johnnie is the latest venture in the Johnnie’s Charcoal Broiler Empire located in Oklahoma City’s historic Deep Deuce district. Situated on the ground floor of the Level Deep Deuce Apartments at NE 2nd and Walnut, Urban Johnnie is a casual sports bar and grill in a modern, upscale setting.
The two-level restaurant features plenty of televisions for watching your favorite game and a spacious patio, great for outdoor dining. The interior of the restaurant has an urban feel with exposed concrete columns, Edison bulb light fixtures, and unfinished wood planks. The bar has an excellent wine and beer selection and a full selection of spirits.
Urban Johnnie pleases diners with delicious burgers, hearty salads and topnotch comfort foods. Owners, Rick and David Haynes, continue the family tradition of offering outstanding food that their father, the original Johnnie, startedwhen he opened his first metro restaurant in the 1970’s.
While the menu includes Johnnie’s staples like the Theta burger - smothered in hickory sauce and shredded cheese - Urban Johnnie also offers many specialty burgers like the Thunder Burger (beef patty, house made onion dip, hash browns) and Johnnie the Greek (chicken patty, julienne red peppers and onions, Greek dressing and feta. The Hummus a Tune is a delicious veggie burger with “dirty” hummus and grilled onions. It’s a veggie burger for people who are afraid of veggie burgers, a burger re-envisioned as comfort food.
Know what kind of burger you want? Feel free to build your own! Start from scratch with the Burger Bar. Choose from several meat and vegetarian options, including beef, chicken and veggie burger patties. Next, pick from seven different cheeses, sauces, bacon, fried egg, roasted poblano chilies, guacamole, hummus, and many other fresh ingredients.
You’ll also find more than just burgers on the menu. There are many other offerings, including tacos, sandwiches, soups and salads, and entrees like pot roast, grilled salmon and chicken fried chicken.
The appetizer menu features “dirty’ hummus, cheese fries, chips with salsa, queso and guacamole, and the house made onion dip served with fresh-cut chips. The onion dip is a menu favorite. It’s insanely delicious, and quite possibly, addictive. For dessert - be sure to try the battered apple rings – fried, battered apples served with cinnamon sugar, vanilla ice cream, and caramel sauce.
Urban Johnnie’s success can be attributed to the unwavering commitment to quality and service that began more than 40 years ago. Johnnie Haynes began his long career in the restaurant business as a dishwasher at Oklahoma City’s famed Split-T at NW 56 and Western Avenue, where he eventually worked his way up to manager. In 1971, Haynes left the Split-T to open the first Johnnie’s Charcoal Broiler.
Today, Johnnie’s legacy lives on through his sons, David and Rick Haynes. With three concepts in the Johnnie’s family including Johnnie’s Charcoal Broiler, West, and Urban Johnnie, their mission is clear. They will continue to serve central Oklahoma with the same commitment to excellence that began more than four decades ago.
