In Oklahoma City we’ve been doing steaks for decades, and we think we’ve got it pretty well figured out. Our excellent tradition of tender juicy cuts of beef has changed little since the days of chuckwagons and campfires. Here are three great steakhouses that take a different spin on this taste of tradition.
Mickey Mantle’s Steakhouse
At this Bricktown steakhouse the baseball legend meets modern elegance. The red brick and cherry wood dining rooms are warm and welcoming and the old baseball photographs transport you straight to the ballpark. The prime “Cowboy Cut” Rib Eye and New York Strip are in a league of their own and you might as well leave your knife at home if you order the Filet. Enjoy the side items family style as the orders are huge and you’ll need to save room for the delicious Crème Brulee. With live music every weekend and these homerun steak selections, a simple Saturday at the ballpark will never be the same. 7 Mickey Mantle Drive ~ 405-272-0777.
Cattleman’s Steakhouse
Strap on your stirrups and bring a cowboy sized appetite for a steak so good you’ll think you slipped into an old western. Located at the edge of Stockyards City, Cattleman’s is the
oldest continuously operating restaurant in Oklahoma City. The historic steakhouse has served up delicious homestyle cooking to many famous faces including Gene Autry, John Wayne and Reba McIntyre. Order President Bush’s choice, the T-Bone Steak and a side of crispy onion rings. But remember to save room in your wranglers for the crème pie. Oh and if you’re feeling adventurous try the Lamb Fries, a Cattleman specialty. 1309 S. Agnew ~ 405-236-0416.
Mahogany Steakhouse
If you’re looking for an upscale rendition of the Oklahoma steakhouse tradition, Mahogany Steakhouse can’t be beat. Slip into one of the huge wooden booths for a gourmet dinner production impressive enough for even the most culinary savvy guest. The menu boasts a variety of USDA hand cut prime steaks all of which arrive at the table cooked to perfection. Be sure to get a side of the famous Creamed Spinach and Sauteed Mushrooms. Bacon-Wrapped Scallops and Austrailian Lobster Tails will impress seafood lovers and the wine selections are sure to satisfy. 3241 W. Memorial ~ 405-748-5959.
