Mexican Masters expresses the hopes, desires, idealism, and culture of early twentieth-century Mexico through its artists. Amassed over many decades, the collection developed through the visionary and interpretive skills of art patron Alvar Carrillo Gil. From the Mexican Revolution and Spanish Civil War to the Second World War, violent revolution and dramatic social change-both nationally and internationally-shaped the ideals of Mexico and its people. The Carrillo Gil Collection was molded by these principles, and the works it includes portray not only the artists' reactions to revolution, depression, and industrialization, as well as the impact of religion and need for social reform, but also the collector's. Mexican Masters pays humble recognition to Mexico's violence, war, and suffering, the United States Depression, and the artists' subsequent impression of inhumanity in an industrialized nation. Guest curated by Armando Sáenz Carrillo in cooperation with the Oklahoma City Museum of Art and Chief Curator Hardy George, the exhibition will be the first time these artists have been seen by Oklahoma audiences. A Museum-produced audio guide and bilingual didactics and labels will accompany the exhibition. The catalogue includes four essayists, including Armando Sáenz Carrillo, grandson of the collector Alvar Carrillo Gil; art critics Renato Gonzáles Mello and Olivier Debroise; and Hardy George. The Oklahoma City Museum of Art is the only venue for Mexican Masters: Rivera, Orozco, and Siqueiros, Selections from the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, on exhibition through March 26, 2006. The exhibit showcases the masters of post-revolutionary Mexico from one unique collection. With selections made from the Carrillo Gil Collection in Mexico City, the exhibition introduces to Oklahoma the dominant Mexican artists of the 1930s and 1940s and their successors with 68 works by artists Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros as well as related works by Luis Nishizawa and Gunther Gerzso.
